Harlan Ellison & JR JR Dr. Strange mini-series!:
Source: © The Comic Wire - Comic Book Resources - Beau Yarbrough - 4/10/00John Romita Jr. says he will be working on a three-part Dr. Strange miniseries written by none other than Harlan Ellison! The famous writer and long-time comic fan has hand-picked JR JR for the series.
According to Romita, the plotline is that "Dormammu is dying. If he dies, it throws the whole netherworld off, and Dr. Strange has to go inside him."
Source: © Ramblings 2000 - Rich Johnston - 4/20/00
However.... the Ellison/Romita Dr. Strange project news has been disparaged by Marvel editor Tom Breevort, who said: "...my understanding is that this is another project that hasn't really even been submitted yet, much less approved. So while it's still possible for it to happen, it's nowhere near definite, other than that JR JR and Harlan seem to want to do it."
Sony/Columbia "releases" Dr. Strange movie:
Source: © Variety - Michael Fleming - 4/4/00Reports are that Sony/Columbia won't be going forward with the Doctor Strange movie after all. Apparently talks between the studio and Marvel hit a wall after six months of dealmaking.
Don't despair, Strange fans. Marvel will shop the film to other studios. Still showing interest in making the Strange film are screenwriter Michael France (GoldenEye) and directors Chuck Russell (Eraser, The Mask) and Steve Norrington (Blade).
Ostrander/Mandrake Dr. Strange?:
Source: © Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) - issue #253 - 2/25/00CBEM: That being said, whenever you finish the series (D.C.'s MARTIAN MANHUNTER), what are the odds you and Tom (Mandrake) would consider reviving Marvel's long-abandoned (and abused) Doctor Strange? I once read an interview where you expressed a fondness for the character. (and I would love to see how Tom might portray the eye of Agamotto).
------
Here at the Sanctum Sanctorum, we think that John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake would make an excellent Dr. Strange creative team, similar to the great Thomas/Colan or Engelhart/Colan team.
Dr. Strange movie writer/director:
Source: © The Comics Continuum - 2/3/00Sources tell The Continuum that Chuck Russell could be attached as writer/director of the Doctor Strange movie at Sony. Russell has experience in the comic-book world, having directed The Mask in 1994, based on the Dark Horse Comics character. Russell's other movie credits include Eraser, The Blob, and Nightmare on Elm Street 3.
Don Murphy, a producer of the Doctor Strange project, says: "There are movies people see about making happen, and there are movies that people really, really want to make, and that's what's happening with Doctor Strange."
New Marvel Knights series - Dr. Strange to appear:
Source: © Another Universe - Newsarama - 1/14/00Writer Chuck Dixon spoke out a bit this week about Marvel Knights, the new upcoming ongoing series he and artist Eduardo Barreto have in the works for the Marvel Knights imprint, tentatively set for a April launch...
"Marvel Knights is gonna be very much an anti-group book. The book brings together a rotating cast of the characters under the Marvel Knights banner. There will be no permanent roster and no permanent secret lair. They will never refer to themselves by a group name. The group will be more of a network than a team and begin to rely upon one another more."
"Daredevil and Black Widow will be the core of the 'team' with Punisher, Dagger (of Cloak & Dagger) and Shang Chi filling out the cast in the first 3 issue arc."
"Each adventure will bring a new reason for Daredevil or Black Widow to get a bunch of vigilantes together," explained Dixon. "No status quo in this book. This isn't to say there won't be ongoing subplots involving the regular or semi-regular characters, but they'll only involve the group members who don't have regular books."
Though Dixon is keeping pretty mum on future cast members, the writer did tell Newsarama that Moon Knight - for which Dixon is well known - will "certainly" be showing up, and that
Dr. Strange plays an important part in a future arc.Gene Colan appearance, and Essential poll:

Don Murphy, the producer of the potential Dr. Strange movie from Columbia and Angry Films, said that Baron Mordo may be the best choice for the villain in the movie. If everything goes well, the Dr. Strange movie could be in theatres as early as summer 2001.
Columbia options Dr. Strange for Live-Action Movie!:
Source: © The Hollywood Reporter - 11/11/99
Columbia Pictures has acquired the feature rights to Marvel Comics' "Doctor Strange: Master of the Mystic Arts" and is fast-tracking the property as a potential live-action franchise. Don Murphy of Columbia-based Angry Films will produce. "Doctor Strange" is the second Marvel property Columbia is developing, joining the long-in-the-works "Spider-Man," which the studio obtained after a sticky legal battle that ended in March.
Marvel Heroes: The Lost Generation (#1 - Jan. 2000)
Source: Comics Continuum - 10/22/99
Written by John Byrne and Roger Stern
Art by John Byrne and Al Milgrom
Byrne continues to reinvent comics history (ugh!). At least there's an appearance by Doctor Strange! Here's the hype from Marvel on this 12-issue series:
"Think there weren't costumed crime-fighters before Spider-Man? Think again. Get ready to meet a whole host of previously unknown heroes and villains. Who are Fireball, Flatiron, Cassandra, Oxbow, Liberty, Captain Hip, Sunshine, the Yankee Clipper, Effigy, Rumor and The Eternal Brain? And what about some of the faces you may recognize, such as Nick Fury, the Watcher, the Sub-Mariner and Doctor Strange? What is their part in this enigmatic adventure? The Marvel Universe has a secret... and it's time you learned it.
And here's what Roger Stern (scripter on this series and writer of many fine Strange
tales) has to say about Doctor Strange in relation to this series:
Source: © Mania:
Newsarama - 10/29/99
"And of course,.there's Doctor Strange, who obviously predates the Fantastic Four. After all, he spent years learning his craft at the side of the Ancient One, and in his very first story (Strange Tales #110), the name of Doctor Strange is 'spoken in whispers'. That doesn't happen overnight. His channeling of mystic forces over the decades helped maintain his youthful vigor. (And besides, after his confrontation with Death, back in the Engelhart-Brunner Silver Dagger stories, Doc stopped aging.)"

Alternate future Strange appearances:
Clea, Sorceress Supreme, makes another appearance in the Earth X series (#6, Sept. 1999).
And in Marvel's other Alternate future line (MC2), the elderly Doctor Strange and the upstart magician Doc Magus appear in the final issue of J2 (#12, Sept. 1999). J2 is the son of the original Juggernaut, who obtained his powers from the fabled Ruby of Cytorrak.
New Dr. Strange movie script:
Source: © Another Universe: The Daily Buzz - 7/14/99Marvel exec Avi Arad told Variety columnist Michael Fleming the big screen will be packed with caped do-gooders, including:
- Blade's David Goyer will write a Dr. Strange script for Sony!
Source: © Variety - Michael Fleming - 7/13/99
Sony Pictures Entertainment is negotiating for rights to "Dr. Strange," to be scripted by David Goyer ("Blade"). Marvel chose Sony over several other "Strange" suitors because of "Spider-Man," which SPE is developing after years of legal entanglements.
Here's hoping this project will materialize into an actual movie! With the amazing special effects that can be done today, the magical world of Dr. Strange could really be done well. For example, watch the last 15 minutes of the recent SF/noir movie Dark City, with it's telekinetic battle scene between the hero John Murdoch and the alien Strangers' leader, and you'll think "Dr. Strange vs. Mordo" for sure!

Comic Book Artist is from TwoMorrows Publishing, the same folks who produce the wonderful Jack Kirby Collector magazine. Highly recommended!!

Source: © Mania: Newsarama - 5/14/99According to this week's Marvel email newsletter, editor Ruben Diaz is currently exploring the possibility of a new "magic" or "supernatural" line of titles for premiere this fall.
According to rumors, the new ongoing Blade series by Marc Andreyko and Bart Sears just may be included in the line, and the other potential titles are Ghost Rider, the Defenders, and Magik.Let's hope this new line of titles includes more appearances by Marvel's Master of the Mystic Arts, Dr. Strange!
Silver Surfer / Dr. Strange story:

Jose Ladronn and the Lofficiers (Randy and Jean-Marc) are updating and putting their spin on a classic Marvel story...
The 64-page story is a direct sequel to Silver Surfer #18 - the abrupt final issue of the classic Lee and Kirby run, and explains how and why the Surfer forswore his vow of revenge against mankind.
In the sequel, which is sure to give Kirby fans drooling fits, the Surfer teams up with the '70s era Dr. Strange and Iron Man, who wears his Moebius-designed armor (only seen before in the Moebius Iron Man poster) for the occasion.
Together, the heroes must save an alternate Earth from utter destruction at the hands of the Overlord (last seen in the Lee-Buscema Silver Surfer #6). The alternate world turns out to be one that will be familiar to hard-core Surfer fans - an Earth without superheroes as seen in the Lee/Kirby Simon & Shuster Silver Surfer graphic novel and the Lee/Moebius Silver Surfer: Parable graphic novel. On this other world, the three find a familiar face - another Silver Surfer, enslaved by the Overlord.
As Jean-Marc explains it: "the Surfer story is a labor of love for both the writers and the artist. I don't know who mentioned the Surfer first, Jose or I, but the idea sprang from a desire to do a story taking place immediately after Silver Surfer #18, and to bring the Moebius Surfer into the Marvel Universe. When it is all said and done, I think the Quentin Tarentino-written line about whose Silver Surfer was "the" Silver Surfer, Kirby or the Moebius (in Crimson Tide) sparked the original thought."
Jean-Marc reports that Ladronn... plans to begin the Silver Surfer story next May.

If you read DOCTOR STRANGE #2 (released this week) and had a little troubling following along, no need to adjust the dosages of your medication. According to the mini-series' co-writer Dan Jolley, due to a production error, an "outdated" version of the script got used, a script that includes more than a couple of typos. Jolley apologized to readers and reported that the Marvel Knights crew have plans to publish a guide of sorts to the errors and their corrections in next month's issue #3.

Change in artist for Dr. Strange #3 & #4:
Source: © Mania: Newsarama - 12/11/98 - by Michael Doran
Marvel Knights' Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada have announced that Eisner-award winning artist Paul (Concrete) Chadwick has been pegged to illustrate issue's #3 and #4 of Tony Harris and Dan Jolley's upcoming DOCTOR STRANGE mini-series, debuting this month. According to the MK boys, Harris and Jolley will continue to script and write the series with Chadwick taking over the penciling chores for Harris, who is illustrating the 1st two issues. Chadwick returns to Marvel to do his first work for the publisher since penciling an issue of Dazzler in the early '80's.
"Scheduling conflicts" was the reason Marvel Knights gave for the change, and for his part, Harris reports he is currently developing a new Batman/JSA project for DC, as well as two new creator-owned projects, Obergeist and Lazurus 5 for DC as well.
