Untold Tales of Spider-Man:
Strange Encounter
(October, 1998)

Kurt Busiek (plot), Roger Stern (script), Neil Vokes (pencils), Jay Geldhof
(inks), Steve Leialoha (cover)
The never-before-told very first meeting between Spider-Man and Dr. Strange. They
should have left it untold. This looks and reads like an Archie or Scooby-Doo comic!
Archie, Reggie and Veronica (alias Peter Parker and pals) fret over who is going
out with who and where. Dumb thieves steal magic lantern from museum. Spidey
runs into thieves. Baron Mordo wants the lantern to gain favor with a
other-worldly demon, who is revealed to be Dormammu. Strange teams up with Spidey to
thwart their evil plans. The good old days have seldom been so bad.
What If?... # 113
(October, 1998)
"What If... Tony Stark became the Master of the Mystical Arts?"
Chris Duffy (writer), Gregg Schigiel (pencils), Ron Boyd (inks)
An interesting premise, where Tony Stark is a techno-wizard and Stephen Strange is his
grumbling assistant. The story alternates between spoof and pathos, but at least it
was a little more interesting than the awful Untold Tales of Spider-Man: Strange Encounter
issue.
Marvel Adventures #14
(May, 1998)
"Of Monsters and Magicians"
Ralph Macchio (writer), Andy Kuhn (pencils),
Harry Candelario (inks)
Featuring the Incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner, the Juggernaut/Cain Marko, Black Tom Cassidy,
and Cytorrak (of the famed Crimson Bands of Cytorrak).
Bruce Banner seeks Dr. Strange's help in teaching him the way toward inner peace, to end
the rage of the Hulk . The Juggernaut, losing the power he once received from the
Crimson Gem of Cytorrak, storms into Strange's sanctum to recharge from the Gem.
Banner turns into the Hulk, and the requisite Hulk Smash fight ensues. The
Juggernaut tries to absorb too much power from the Gem, and Cytorrak himself steps in to
banish Juggernaut.
Shadows & Light #2
(April, 1998)
Jim Starlin (writer/artist)
A simple yet powerful 8-page black-&-white tale, which Starlin describes as:
"Strange as a man who's trying to redeem himself by battling evil in metaphysical
terms". The story visually depicts a cosmic confrontation and transformation,
while the narration depicts Strange's musings on the many roles he plays as Sorcerer
Supreme. Nary a word-balloon or sound-effect intrudes in this Strange tale.
The Sensational Spider-Man
#22-23
(Dec. 1997 - Jan. 1998)
Doctor Strange: What is it
that Disturbs You, Stephen?
or... Mourning Becomes Electra
(Oct, 1997)
P. Craig Russell (writer/artist), Mark Andreyko (script),
Lovern Kindzierski (colors), Galen Showman (letters)
A remake of Dr. Strange Annual #1 (1976). Russell redrew the entire story (except
for one panel which we have yet to identify). This classic story depicts an
allegorical conflict in the other-worldly plane of DITKOPOLIS. The wicked
sorceress/queen Elektra entraps Strange to break the spell that binds the magicks of this
realm to her sister Celeste, so that she can supposedly save the realm from a lingering
death. Strange uncovers Elektra's deception, and in the ensuing battle her lust for
power and revenge causes both the destruction of herself and the realm of Ditkopolis.
